Mr. Louis H. Gump - 2003 ETSU Foundation Margin of Excellence Award

Louis Gump

Based on his experiences in the Morehead Program at the University of North Carolina, Louie Gump recognized that many of our region's best young promising leaders were leaving Tennessee for higher educational opportunities elsewhere. Believing that a leadership program at ETSU similar to the Morehead Program would enable ETSU to attract and retain these young leaders while also improving the university as a whole, Louie and Lucy Gump provided a significant gift as the seed capital for the Roan Scholars Leadership Program.

The Roan Program is transforming the students' lives, and is also improving the overall quality of academic and student life at ETSU. Millions in current and planned gifts have been pledged or given for the Roan Program. Much of this impressive result has been simply because the people and businesses of our region and beyond, whether they be alumni or friends of ETSU, have so much faith, trust and esteem for Louie Gump as the founding benefactor and Chair of the Roan Steering Committee. Mr. Gump and his wife Lucy, have also supported Athletics, the Warren-Greene Golf Center, the Quillen College of Medicine, the ETSU College of Pharmacy, WETS-FM, Friends of the Reece Museum, Friends of Music, the Center for Appalachian Studies and Services, and many other areas through the ETSU Foundation.
