Spanish major Peri Loftis is a leader on ETSU campus in promoting awareness of and interaction with regional Hispanic culture. Her leadership was recently recognized when she was awarded the 2012 Summit Award for Outstanding Student Organization President, for a service-oriented organization. Peri has served as president of Los Compadres, ETSU's Spanish Club, since 2010. Peri has done tremendous things for the club, which have directly enhanced the experience of students interested in Spanish-speaking culture at ETSU. She organizes regular roundtable discussions in Spanish over dinner, Spanish-language movie screenings, book club gatherings, and tutoring sessions for students of all levels of Spanish. In 2011 and again in 2012, Los Compadres organized a free soccer clinic, Sports 4 All (Deportes para Todos), designed to work with Hispanic children from the local community while providing their parents with bilingual information on useful community services.
Recently, ETSU's chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Hispanic Studies Honors Society, has been reactivated, having its first initiation ceremony in fall 2011. Peri was elected to serve as president of this organization as well and is currently making plans to expand the reach of campus and community service offered by Spanish students at ETSU. Through her work with the Language and Culture Resource Center, Peri is also a key participant in Hispanic Student Day and the annual Corazón Latino festival in downtown Johnson City.
