The Economics and Finance Department would like to invite you to consider the challenges and opportunities that a degree in economics or finance can offer you. In the Department of Economics and Finance at East Tennessee State University, we are proud of our BA and BBA programs which focus on developing the problem solving skills that will enhance your career opportunities and help explain some of the complex issues of today. Below is a list of careers and employers of our graduates in economics and finance over the past ten years to help give you an idea of the type of career possibilities that may be available to you.
The faculty members of the Department of Economics and Finance also know that college is more than just career preparation. It's an opportunity to learn about the issues that are shaping the future. In your courses, you will grapple with such questions as "How can an economy become sustainable?" and "What is a fair tax?" among others. However, it is also important to use your college education to enable you to have a fulfilling and rewarding career. We believe that a degree in economics or finance will not only make you a more informed citizen but will also enhance your employment opportunities upon graduation.
Even in these tough economic times, companies are willing to pay excellent wages to talented individuals with good problem-solving skills. For example, the Wall Street Journal's web site, WSJ.com, reported that the average starting salary for the class of 2011 was $53,690 for economics majors and $51,503 for finance majors. Another web site, Bankrate.com, showed that the median starting salary for economics and finance majors was between $45,000 and $50,000.
