ETSU'S SCOTTISH & IRISH TRADITIONAL MUSIC PROGRAM
East Tennessee State University invites students to examine the rich and varied musical heritage of Scotland and Ireland through a range of coursework and performance opportunities. The Department of Appalachian Studies and its renowned program in Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Roots Music Studies offers a new major as well as a minor concentration in Scottish & Irish Traditional Music. New classes within this concentration offer unique, hands-on experiences for students to learn the music of their choice, while immersing themselves in the culture that surrounds the music.
Courses include:

• Individual Instruction in Scottish fiddle, pipes.
• Individual Instruction in Irish guitar, bouzouki, whistles, pipes, accordion.
• Intro to Scottish & Irish Studies.
• Intro to Beginning Gaelic Language & Culture.
• Scottish & Irish Traditional Music.
• Appalachia in Scotland & Ireland (Summer Study Abroad).
• Ballads of Appalachia & the British Isles.
• Scots Irish in Appalachia.
• Scottish & Irish Folklife.
• Scottish & Irish Literature.
• Storytelling.
• Appalachian Dance.
• Recording Technology.
In addition to the summer Study Abroad in Scotland and Ireland, individual instruction,
band classes, and Scottish/Irish studies courses that have long been at the heart
of the ETSU program, new classes are also being offered in fieldwork, archives and
music collections, audio production, traditional dance, and more.
ETSU has long been at the forefront of traditional music in higher education, and
is now positioned to offer students a wide-ranging and flexible degree program. The
courses are part of the new major concentration in Scottish and Irish traditional
music. “The new courses give students an opportunity to study Scottish and Irish Music
in a cultural context, developing a deeper understanding of the music they love,”
Scottish fiddler and Assistant Professor Jane MacMorran, who directs the Scottish
and Irish Studies program, said. Scholarships are available for in-state, out-of-state,
and international students.
