According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 7,500 lives have been saved by the proper use of child restraints during the past 20 years.

Yet, motor vehicle crashes still remain the number one killer of children ages 4 to 14 in America. The reason? Too often it is the improper use or non-use of child safety seats and booster seats.

The state's child passenger safety law, which went into effect July 2004 (revised July 2005), has served to spotlight the use of child restraints in vehicles. The law states that children under the age of 4 must be in approved child safety seats appropriate for their age and size, and children ages 4 through 8 under 4’9” tall must be in approved belt positioning booster seats appropriate for their age and size.

The East Tennessee Child Passenger Safety Center has been established through funding provided by the Governor's Highway Safety Office.  Instruction is provided within the 33 counties of East Tennessee regarding child passenger safety. Use the site for your primary resource to obtain information on the National Child Passenger Safety Certification Training Program, recertification information for CPS techs, educational materials, dates for upcoming checkpoints, locations of fitting stations, and forms for class registration or reporting data.
