ETSU Opera Theatre to present 'All-American Production'

November 13, 2001

JOHNSON CITY – An "All-American Production" will be presented by the East Tennessee State University Opera Theatre on Friday, Nov. 30, at 8 p.m. in Mathes Hall.

This free program includes a short version of Maury Yeston's "Phantom," a "Revue" of Kurt Weill's most famous music for Broadway, and the American chamber opera "Medium" by Gian Carlo Menotti.

Yeston's "Phantom" is the American version of "The Phantom of the Opera," and although it is not as famous as Webber's British version, the music is superb. Weill, a German immigrant, produced many famous tunes for Broadway, such as "September Song" (recorded by Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra), "Mack the Knife" from "The Threepenny Opera" (recorded by Louis Armstrong), and "Speak Low" (recorded by Barbra Streisand). Menotti is one of the most important 20th century opera composers, and his opera "Medium" is about a "fake" medium realizing her "real" ability of contacting ghosts, but the main theme of the opera is about love and human nature.
