JOHNSON CITY – East Tennessee State University's School of Continuing Studies and its office of professional development are offering the following upcoming "just for fun" and educational programs:
- This holiday season, the public is invited to share "Dinner with Dickens" on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 8 p.m. at Old Quarters in Downtown Jonesborough. This special dinner, during which Charles Dickens will read from his numerous works, includes a traditional Victorian meal, a dance demonstration by the East Tennessee Scottish Country Dancers, traditional Victorian caroling accompanied by flute and violin, and other entertainment. Tickets are $40 per person or $75 per couple for this event, which is developed in conjunction with ACTA Productions (American Center for Theatrical Activity).
- A Children's Holiday Art Workshop will take place Wednesday-Friday, Dec. 19-21, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Nelson Fine Arts Center, 324 E. Main St. This art experience provides an opportunity for children ages 6-12 to spend one to three days designing tree ornaments, drawing and painting pictures, and making personalized presents and other holiday treasures. Registration is $20 per day; participants should bring bag lunches and wear "paint-friendly" clothing. This workshop is co-sponsored by the Nelson Fine Arts Center.
- A Phlebotomy Certification Course will be held from Jan. 10-April 25, 2002, with classes scheduled from 5-7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Nave Center, 1000 W. E St., Elizabethton. This course consists of 15 weeks of classroom instruction and 120 hours of clinical practicum for those wishing to become phlebotomists, who work in hospitals and clinical settings, drawing patients' blood for medical purposes. Students who successfully complete the course are eligible to sit for the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) examination to become certified phlebotomists. The course is taught by Linda Lahr, ETSU assistant professor and director of the medical laboratory technician program in the department of health related professions. Registration is $395 (liability insurance, exam fees and uniform expenses are extra).
