ETSU appoints new director of Hancock County school health centers

JOHNSON CITY – The College of Nursing at East Tennessee State University has named Dr. Jennifer M. Schaller-Ayers as director of the Hancock County School-Based Health Centers in Sneedville.

She will oversee the management of clinics located at Hancock County Elementary and Hancock County High School.

Schaller-Ayers joined the university faculty in the fall of 2001 and is an associate professor in the ETSU department of family and community nursing. She earned her undergraduate degree in nursing from San Jose State University and received her master of nursing science from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock. In 1994, she was awarded her Ph.D. degree from the Oregon Health Sciences University.

Schaller-Ayers has been working with members of the Southwest Virginia Graduate Medical Education Consortium in assessing the health status of residents in rural Southwest Virginia.

Established in 1995, the Hancock County High School-Based Health Center offers primary care for acute and chronic illnesses, preventive health care, mental health counseling, and risk-reduction and self-actualization programs. Nearly 2,000 client encounters are reported annually.

The Hancock County Elementary School-Based Health Center opened in 1998 and has more than 1,900 visits each year.
