Storyteller Allison Smith to appear at ETSU as part of Black History Month

January 24, 2002

JOHNSON CITY – Storyteller Allison Smith will present tales of African-Americans in history at East Tennessee State University on Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the D.P. Culp University Center's Martha Street Culp Auditorium.

Smith "has received kudos wherever she has performed" her African-American dramatic presentation, "Echoes of the Vision." She began telling tales to enhance her handcrafted figurine business, Ale + 2.

"I needed to talk about the figures I create – who they are, what they're doing. Storytelling was a natural method of explanation," she said.

Smith attended numerous storytelling seminars at Kent State University in Ohio and is a member of the Cleveland Association of Black Storytellers. She holds a B.S.Ed. from The Ohio State University, where she majored in public recreation, and she is currently working toward a master's degree in counseling with an emphasis on African-American history.

This free public Black History Month event is sponsored by the ETSU office of multicultural affairs. For more information or for special assistance for persons with disabilities, call multicultural affairs at (423) 439-4210.
