Yes, prospective students who plan to enroll in the English Language Center program at East Tennessee State University may be accepted conditionally to the university if all but the language proficiency requirements for admission are fulfilled.   Successful completion of Level 112 of the English for Academic Purposes program will be sufficient evidence of language proficiency and can be used in lieu of the TOEFL.  Please visit the ELS Center on campus website for more information.

5. What are the estimated expenses for the first year of study at ETSU?

In order for us to issue a Form I-20, which you will use to apply for the F-1 visa and gain admission to the United States, we will need to have original and current (no more than 6 months old) financial documentation verifying that you (or a sponsor willing to support you [also providing a written statement]) have sufficient funds available to support your studies. If your sponsor is a US Citizen or Permanent Resident, s/he would also be required to submit an Affidavit of Support (instructions) from USCIS. At this time (2014-2015 academic year), international undergraduate students are required to show a minimum of $39,959USD immediately available ( $38,363USD for graduate students), though there will undoubtedly be an increase in the next academic year. Please see the Fee Estimate and Bursar's Office Graduate Fees for more information.

For your information, even if you did receive financial assistance from ETSU, you would still have to provide original financial documentation as almost no scholarship covers all of the personal expenses and miscellaneous fees. As to how much the statement should show all depends on how much your scholarship (if you receive one) is worth. Please see International Student Scholarships for more information about financial assistance.

In order to issue the I-20, we must have evidence that these funds are immediately available to you. These funds can be a combination of sources, including scholarships, personal funds, or a sponsor’s funds (checking, savings, or money market accounts; no stocks, bonds, property, etc.). This is not a bill for ETSU ; rather, it is an estimate of expenses that students may incur that we must show to the US Department of State and Department of Homeland Security (formerly INS: Immigration & Naturalization Services). When we issue the Form I-20 for a prospective student, we are telling the US Government that we know that the student will not become a public charge or a financial burden to the US Government.

Our mailing address is as follows:

ETSU International Programs & Services

Please note that we do not accept faxed or emailed/scanned financial documents . When submitting your financial documents, please include your name. If you wish to send your documents express mail, the correct address is the same as above except instead of the “PO Box 70668”, please use “Central Receiving Drive”. In addition, if you would like for your I-20 to arrive via express mail, please contact your credit card company and inform them that you will be having an international charge (if it is an international credit card) and complete and return the Express Mail Form.

For further information and a breakdown of the estimated expenses, please refer to this document: Fee Estimate for Undergraduate/Graduate Students.
