Cable TV FAQs

Many newer televisions do not require any special installation to work with the ETSU cable television system. Before you call the OIT Help Desk, please read and follow these steps:

  1. Check to assure that the television is connected to an electrical outlet and to the cable coax outlet. To connect the TV and cable outlet you will need a coaxial cable. These cables are usually available at any electronics retailer.
  2. If you have a remote control, make sure it is working.
  3. If you do not receive all of the channels listed on the channel lineup, your TV may need to be setup and programmed.
All modern televisions have similar setup steps to prepare them to receive cable channels. Please refer to your owner's manual for steps specific to our TV model.
    1. Press the "Power" button to turn on the TV.
    2. Press the "Menu" button.
    3. Select "Setup".
    4. Select "Antenna" then "Cable".
    5. Select "Auto Program / Auto Tune" then "OK"

How can I tell if my TV can receive a digital signal?

The only sure way to know if your TV can receive a digital signal is to test it on the digital cable TV system.  In general, most TVs sold in the United States after 2006 include a digital (QAM) tuner, although some low end and less expensive models still did not include the functionality to tune digital channels as late as 2009.  Many TVs, especially high end TVs, produced between 2000 and 2006 will also be equipped with digital tuners.  Any TV produced prior to 2000 will be unlikely to include digital tuners, but high end TVs in this category may have internal digital tuners however they may not be the QAM standard so be careful.  Most TVs will have a sticker on the back of the TV listing their manufacture date.

Who should I contact if for help with my cable television?

Please call the OIT Help Desk at 439-4648 or e-mail oithelp@etsu.edu. You may also stop by the Student Help Desk on the first floor of the D.P. Culp Center at the bottom of the ramp and adjacent to the D.P. Culp computer lab.

The cable system was converted to digital and I have a QAM receiver but I do not receive any channels.  What do I do?

You need to "scan" your channels.  This is generally done from the setup menu on your TV or your external receiver.  This will take a few minutes to complete and then you will see all the channels again.

My TV isn't HD capable.  Does that mean I can no longer watch the channels that are listed as HD now?

No, the same channels in digital standard definition will still be available to you.
