Tuition Reduction Plan

In accordance with State Law 49.7.113, East Tennessee State University (ETSU) offers a tuition reduction plan for individuals who are 100% disabled.  Tuition under this plan is reduced to $70 per semester; however, students are responsible for books and supplies required for participation in classes.  Students taking Regents Online Degree Program courses or other courses with special fees will be assessed all fees related to those courses.   Tuition reduction is not available for some courses of study.

To be eligible for tuition reduction you must be:

  1.  Considered 100% disabled through Social Security, Veteran’s Affairs or other   appropriate state or federal agency.

  2.  A resident of Tennessee.

  3.  Currently not receiving any support from Tennessee Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, Veteran’s Vocational Rehabilitation or other employment preparation program.

To request consideration for tuition reduction, you must

  1. Complete an intake with Disability Services

  2. Provide proof of disability such as social security statement of disability, and proof of residence.

  3. Make the request prior to the 14 th day of classes.

Upon approval of criteria for undergraduate students, the Director will complete a tuition reduction approval form and submit it to the Associate Director of Admissions for appropriate processing.

Upon approval of criteria for graduate students, the tuition reduction form will be sent to the Graduate School for processing.

Disability Audit Plan

If you have a permanent and total disability and are unable to work in an occupation that brings an income, and are a legal resident of Tennessee, you may audit courses at ETSU without paying tuition charges, maintenance fees, students’ activity fees or registration fees.  You will not receive college credit for courses that you audit.  Your participation in particular courses may be limited or denied by ETSU basis according to space availability.

You must provide the Director of Disability Services with proof of disability, proof of social security benefits, and Tennessee residence.  The Director will complete a letter of approval and submit it to the Associate Director of Admissions for processing.

Important Considerations

Students are responsible for checking their student account statement in order to be sure the tuition reduction is applied to their account.

Students who wish to use tuition reduction must provide Disability Services with a signed “Tuition Reduction Request Form” every semester.  This form can be picked up at Disability Services or printed from the Disability Services webpage.
