If I don't see a physician at one of the participating provider locations, can I still participate?
YES. If you contact us we can provide you with a TIPS manual and other smoking cessation and pregnancy health materials. In addition, you can schedule an appointment with a TIPS smoking cessation coach who can assist you with quitting. You can also sign up to participate in a Smoking Cessation Support Group for pregnant women, and may be eligible to participate in our research interviews.
If I don't want to be part of the research study, can I still get help from the TIPS program?
YES! Even if you do not wish to fill out the research questionnaires, you CAN STILL be a part of the TIPS program. Just let the case manager at your practice know this, and she will be happy to talk with you and provide you with the resources you need to quit and be healthy!
What do I receive for participating in the research study?
For your great help, you will receive $20 each time you volunteer your time and energy (total of four opportunities throughout your pregnancy). You also receive free smoking cessation coaching that will help you and your baby be healthy and smoke free. Plus, by sharing your information, you are helping physicians learn how to best help pregnant smokers quit, giving other women a better chance at succeeding too!
Would I be penalized in any way for not participating, or for not finishing the research questionnaires?
NO. Your participation with TIPS is completely separate from your medical care and will not, in any way, affect your quality of care. Your physician doesn't even know whether or not you are participating. Participation is voluntary and, if you change your mind, there are absolutely no consequences.
What is required?
You can see the What to Expect from Participating link for more information. Basically, we ask you (1) to fill out a set of forms near the beginning of your pregnancy, near the end of your pregnancy, and about six weeks after you deliver and (2) to complete a phone interview about 6 months after delivery. We would also gather information from your medical chart about your health and how your delivery went. (Remember, your name would never be tied to any of the information we collect.)
