The program is designed to integrate online classroom settings and clinical learning experiences to prepare its graduates
to effectively carry out the expanding responsibilities of the Registered Dietitian
as health care providers practicing in a variety of health care and research settings.
The curriculum is designed to provide students with an understanding of research design
and an advanced knowledge in applied clinical nutrition.
Students may apply for advanced standing for Registered Dietitians in the MS Clinical Nutrition program. Applicants must already be credentialed as a Registered Dietitian.
The academic and clinical goals of the Advanced Standing for Registered Dietitians
in the Master of Science program are to:
1. Integrate graduate education and research to prepare registered dietitians with advanced nutrition knowledge and clinical skills to benefit the nutrition and health status of individuals and communities.
2. Prepare graduates to develop research skills and foster an evidence-based approach to the practice of clinical dietetics.
Upon completion of the Advanced Standing for Registered Dietitians in the Master of
Science program, students will:
1. Develop advanced skills in conducting nutritional assessments of individual patients/clients with complex medical conditions.
2. Demonstrate problem solving and critical thinking skills in the advanced practice of medical nutrition therapy.
3. Function in a professional manner as a member of the health care team.
4. Have a basic understanding of administration and management skills as related to the practice of clinical nutrition.
5. Function as educators in the clinical, community and academic settings as related to Registered Dietitians.
A student with advanced standing may progress through the curriculum on a full- or
part-time basis and be continuously enrolled in the RDMS program. A student with advanced
standing must maintain a current state dietitian’s license (unless not applicable)
and credentialing by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
Applications for the Registered Dietitians in the MS Clinical Nutrition advanced standing
program are accepted throughout the year. Guidelines for applying are found in the
Graduate Catalog and on the ETSU web site.
