ETSU Family Medicine Residency Application Criteria 2024-2025
Interview invitations are sent via email and are only offered to candidates who submit a complete application via ERAS that includes: medical school transcript, USMLE or COMLEX transcript, two letters of recommendation, a personal statement, and medical school performance evaluation (when it becomes available).
Criteria utilized by the application review committee to select candidates for interview is not limited to, but includes:
Criteria for current U.S. medical students and graduates of U.S. medical schools:
- Passing score for USMLE or COMLEX Step 1
- No more than two failures total on USMLE or COMLEX exam transcript
- Passing scores of exams by the rank order deadline is strongly preferred, however, exceptions may be made in extenuating circumstances
- Medical school graduation within 3 years of July 1 start date of residency
- Exception will be considered only for applicants who have worked either as an independently licensed physician or as a resident/fellow in a U.S. or Canadian accredited training program, with no more than two years away from independent practice or ACGME approved residency/fellowship
- Applicants must be eligible for licensure in Tennessee as outlined by the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners
Criteria for current international medical students and graduates of international medical schools:
- Passing scores for USMLE or COMLEX exams with no failures on any Step exam (including step 3 if applicable) is strongly preferred, however, exceptions may be made in extenuating circumstances
Applicants must have US citizenship, a Green Card or be eligible for J-1 Visa
Medical school graduation within 3 years of July 1 start date of residency- Exception will be considered only for applicants who have worked either as an independently licensed physician or as a resident/fellow in a U.S. or Canadian accredited training program, with no more than two years away from independent practice or ACGME approved residency/fellowship
- Applicants must be eligible for licensure in Tennessee as outlined by the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners
- Applicants with previous residency experience must submit a letter of recommendation from previous program director

Applications are reviewed by our recruitment committee and preference given to applicants with excellent communication skills, US clinical training/experience, motivation, and leadership. A commitment to professionalism in comprehensive, community focused, patient centered, compassionate care is our expectation.
How to Apply
The Department of Family Medicine at East Tennessee State University, James H. Quillen College of Medicine, has three great residency programs located in Bristol, Johnson City and Kingsport, Tennessee. Each is accredited by the ACGME and collectively trains 60 family medicine residents a year.
Our focus is on producing comprehensive, community-focused, patient-centered and compassionate health care providers. We welcome applicants dedicated to the specialty of Family Medicine from U.S. Allopathic and Osteopathic Medical Schools, and from International Medical Schools recognized and approved by the Tennessee State Board of Medical Examiners.
Applications are accepted utilizing the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). We begin the screening process as soon as the ERAS post office opens and schedule interviews October through January/February. Applications are reviewed by our recruitment committee and preference given to candidates with excellent communication skills, US Clinical training/experience, motivation and leadership.
All interviews are virtual. Invitations are sent throughout the season, September through February.
