Resident Education
As a resident-physician at ETSU Johnson City Residency program, you will have the unique opportunity to be actively involved in the Integrative medicine clinic. Whether by referring your patients to the clinic for Acupuncture or Osteopathic manipulation, or by spending a month on an Integrative clinic elective, or participating in a conference about Integrative treatments, the Integrative medicine clinic is a vital component of the residency program.
For a select few residents every year, the Integrative medicine clinic also becomes an expanded training opportunity in Integrative medicine and Acupuncture.
Longitudinal Acupuncture Training in Residency (LATR)
Longitudinal Acupuncture Training in Residency (LATR) is a newly designed program unique to East Tennessee State University's Family Medicine Residency program in Johnson City, for physicians with a strong interest in Integrative Medicine and who are dedicated to becoming highly skilled in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine.
The goal of LATR is to create a new generation of physician leaders in Integrative Medicine with the most comprehensive physician training in Acupuncture, comparable to Acupuncture training by non-physician Licensed Acupuncturists. Given the primary mission of the Quillen College of Medicine at ETSU, LATR/Family medicine residency graduates will be uniquely positioned to provide Family medicine and Integrative medicine to underserved, and/or rural communities.
The LATR training will take place longitudinally while in Family medicine residency. Residents who pursue LATR will have a combination of didactic education and clinical training in Acupuncture, Chinese medicine and Integrative medicine which will be spread out through 3 years of Family Medicine residency.
LATR didactic education will be weekly, and will be led by N. Anton Borja, D.O., M.A.T.C.M, Director of the Integrative Medicine Clinic, and Asst. Professor at the ETSU Family Medicine residency in Johnson City. Clinical training will be a mixture of designated clinic time at the Johnson City clinic, elective rotations in the Integrative clinic, and away electives at other clinic sites.
A capstone project including either a research or community project in Acupuncture or Integrative medicine will be required for completion of LATR. A certificate will be awarded to successful candidates upon graduation from residency.
