Dr. Hirsch is a Professor and Assistant Chair of Research, in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at East Tennessee State University and serves as the Director of the Gwen Fleming Research Laboratory for Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. He previously served as Professor and Assistant Chair for Assessment and Research, and Director of the Laboratory of Resiliency in Psychological and Physical Health, in the Department of Psychology at ETSU (2007-2023). Dr. Hirsch is also a Visiting Professor at Hochschule Coburg (Coburg University of Applied Sciences and Arts), Coburg, Germany.
After receiving his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Wyoming (2003), Dr. Hirsch completed his clinical internship at SUNY Upstate Medical Center, Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (2002-2003), and was awarded an NIMH NRSA Research Fellowship at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, Department of Psychiatry, Center for the Study and Prevention of Suicide (2003-2006). In 2006-2007, Dr. Hirsch was a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology, Rochester Institute of Technology.
Dr. Hirsch’s research interests and expertise focus on the intersection between psychopathology and physical health, and on the role of adaptive characteristics in mitigating risk for poor health outcomes, in vulnerable populations including persons with chronic illness, veterans, older adults, and LGBTQ individuals. He currently serves on the Editorial Boards of several journals, including the British Journal of Health Psychology, Cognitive Therapy and Research, and Suicide and Life-Threatening Behavior, and he has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters focused on resilience in the context of psychopathology and disease.
