JOHNSON CITY Assistant United States Surgeon General David Rutstein will speak about
Hurricanes, Hot Zones, and H1N1: Are We Prepared for Them All? on Tuesday, Oct. 6,
at 7 p.m., in the Grand Soldiers Ballroom of the Carnegie Hotel.
The lecture is part of the Leading Voices in Public Health series sponsored by the ETSU College of Public Health.
Rear Admiral Rutstein is the Director of the Office of Force Readiness and Deployment, responsible for the emergency response activities of 6,500 active duty officers. In addition, Rutstein is a senior adviser to the Surgeon General and to the Assistant Secretary for Health on preparedness, response, and recovery activities. He is the former Chief Medical Officer of the U.S. Public Health Service.
Rutstein, a nationally recognized leader in disaster preparedness and response, led two separate Public Health Service teams in response to Hurricane Katrina, and he addressed the post-earthquake public health needs of Nias Island, Indonesia, following a tsunami and subsequent earthquake. He directed Lessons Learned from the Federal response to Hurricane Katrina for the Homeland Security Council in the White House in 2005 and 2006.
Earlier in his career, Rutstein served for 13 years as a family physician and public health expert in the Federated States of Micronesia.
Rutstein received his medical degree from Brown University, his Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins, and is Board Certified in Family Medicine.
