JOHNSON CITY (April 17, 2020) – East Tennessee State University students Marah Mullins and Shivam Patel are among the recipients of 2020 Appalachian Highlands Twenty Under 20 honors.
Earlier this spring, STREAMWORKS, powered by Eastman Education, recognized 20 students for exemplary achievements in community service, entrepreneurialism, leadership, academics and STEM activities. The honorees serve as ambassadors and role models in their communities.

Marah Mullins (Gate City, Virginia)is majoring in elementary education in the Clemmer College at ETSU. Her goal is to obtain a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, a master’s in educational leadership and to teach middle school mathematics. She plans to coach high school basketball and eventually hold an administrative position within the school system. Mullins is a past Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Virginia state president of parliamentary law, past FCCLA Virginia state president, member of the FCCLA Board of Directors and FCCLA Alumni and Associates, and a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.
Shivam Patel (Morristown) is studying health sciences at ETSU with a concentration in human health. Patel aspires to attend medical school and obtain an M.P.H. degree so he can work in health care policy to increase accessibility and quality for those in need. In addition to being a member of the Roan Scholars Leadership Program, Patel is a Preview and Orientation Leader and was recently elected the 2020-21 president of the Student Government Association. Last summer, he was a site coordinator at Project Transformation in San Antonio, Texas – a literacy camp for children of low socioeconomic backgrounds.

Lily Edwards (Gray), a media and communication major at ETSU, received an honorable mention. Edwards is a member of the Roan Scholars Leadership Program and last year, she spent spring break in Chicago, learning about the school-to-prison pipeline. Last summer, Edwards interned at the Upper East Tennessee Juvenile Detention Center, where she worked first-hand with troubled youth from six surrounding counties.
In an effort to spotlight the critical necessity of STEM education throughout the Appalachian Highlands, STREAMWORKS debuted the Twenty Under 20 Awards last year. The inaugural honorees included ETSU students Austin Ramsey, McKenzie Templeton and Eliza Wampler.
