JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 10, 2022) – For more than a decade, East Tennessee State University has presented spring films free of charge from the South Arts Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers.
The tradition continues this semester.
“We are so excited to have this relationship,” said Dr. Shara Lange, an associate
professor and program head for Radio/TV/Film at ETSU. “I encourage students, faculty, staff and the public to engage with these
films.”
Here is a look at the spring lineup:
At 7 p.m. on Feb. 14 in the D.P. Culp Student Center Auditorium, “Proper Pronouns” will air. The film follows 30 transgender, ordained ministers in the United States. “They are bravely preaching from a pulpit despite the danger they face not only as a transgender person living in the South but also as transgender ministers navigating their way through local, state and national governing bodies who decide what it means to be a human being,” producers wrote.
Between Feb. 20-23, South Arts will stream online “My Name is Pauli Murray.” “As an African American youth raised in the segregated South – who was also wrestling with broader notions of gender identity – Pauli understood, intrinsically, what it was to exist beyond previously accepted categories and cultural norms,” noted South Arts. With a date and location to be announced, the “The Neutral Ground” will air. “In 2015, director CJ Hunt was filming the New Orleans City Council’s vote to remove four confederate monuments,” said producers. “But when that removal is halted by death threats, CJ sets out to understand why a losing army from 1865 still holds so much power in America.”
Between March 13-16, South Arts will stream online “Los Hermanos/The Brothers.” “Tracking their parallel lives in New York and Havana, their poignant reunion, and their momentous first performances together, Los Hermanos/The Brothers offers a nuanced, often startling view of estranged nations through the lens of music and family,” according to South Arts. At 7 p.m. on April 18 in the D.P. Culp Student Center Auditorium, “Lily Topples the World” will air. “Lily Topples the World follows 20-year-old sensation Lily Hevesh – the world’s most acclaimed domino toppler and the only girl in her field – as she rises as an artist, role model and young woman,” wrote producers.
