I am particularly interested in “localizing” K-12 social studies curricula and empowering teachers to develop learning experiences that enable students to identify complex concepts as they manifest in their daily lives and engage in authentic dialogue about those concepts. One of my current projects focuses on engaging students in critical inquiry concerning the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. As an assistant professor at ETSU, I am excited to have the Smokies in my backdoor again to continue this exciting work.

What are you looking forward to the most about being an ETSU faculty member?
As a “pracademic,” my career and experiences can directly benefit our students as they explore their interests and passions at whatever point in their career we meet them. The opportunity of working in a vibrant department with exceptional and collegial members sets the stage for all of us to continue adding to the foundations of our students, and adding a framework for what's next.

I was a long-time member of the faculty of the University of West Florida. I was dual-appointed in the departments of Criminology and Criminal Justice, and Administration and Law, teaching public management and policy in the latter. Over my career I have served, and continue to, as an expert witness in cases involving public safety matters. This again provides our students with up-to-the-minute knowledge of contemporary criminal justice matters. I have taught in law enforcement and corrections academies for several decades.
What are your favorite hobbies?
We have several adult children and grandchildren, so I am tempted to list them as a hobby. Instead, I'll go with being an avid reader and hiker, and revising a few textbooks.
