Krishnan served as Quillen's Dishner Chair of Excellence in Medicine for 16 years.

Whether at home or abroad, East Tennessee State University’s commitment to advancing understanding in complex areas of medical research is embodied by its faculty.

And when it comes to the field of hematology, Dr. Koyamangalath Krishnan is doing exactly that. Earlier this year, Krishnan, a professor emeritus with East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine, recently authored a textbook on hematology for the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), in Chandigarh, India. It serves as a dedication to the founding hematology faculty at PGIMER.

Krishnan, an alum of PGIMER, served as the editor-in-chief of the multi-author publication written entirely by PGIMER graduates. The textbook, “PGI Textbook of Laboratory and Clinical Hematology,” was published by Bhalani Medical Publishing House and covers both malignant and non-malignant blood-related diseases and transfusion medicine, offering a unique blend of clinical and lab knowledge – including recent topics such as COVID-related blood disorders.

The textbook contains chapters on both laboratory and clinical hematology, case studies and clinical vignettes, as well as images and flow plots.

“This textbook is one-of-a-kind, and I am proud to have edited it as a professor emeritus of the Quillen College of Medicine,” said Krishnan. “This book provides a comprehensive look at hematology and will be an excellent resource for clinicians and researchers worldwide.”

Krishnan joined ETSU in 1998 and retired after 24 years at the university, including 16 as the Dishner Chair of Excellence in Medicine at Quillen, a role focused on enhancing research efforts at the college. Krishnan also taught hematology and oncology and saw patients at local medical centers and cancer centers.

Krishnan is one of many ETSU professors who are on the forefront of research in their fields, with ETSU faculty regularly producing premier scholarship on areas of study of critical importance in the Appalachian Highlands and beyond.
