Find cozy places to study on ETSU’s campus on chilly days of ‘little winters’

It’s been an unusually mild winter thus far here in the region. We’ve even had several days of “T-shirt, shorts and sandals” weather in late February and early March.

But don’t get too excited just yet about the daffodil blooms and budding trees. Even though Punxsutawney Phil did not see his shadow last month, and even though March 19 marks the official first day of spring, East Tennessee is notorious for its “little winters,” like redbud winter, dogwood winter and blackberry winter. (Did you know there’s even a whippoorwill winter? Read more from the Tennessee Historical Society here.) There are sure to be several chilly days in the weeks between now and the end of the spring semester.

Here are a few cozy spots around East Tennessee State University’s campus where students can go to study during the inevitable cold snaps ahead:

Residence Halls

Students living in ETSU’s residence halls can put on their sweatshirts and fuzzy socks and curl up in their rooms to study, or meet with friends in the lobby.

Living-Learning Communities

ETSU’s living-learning communities feature spaces within residence halls where students in certain affinity groups or academic programs can live and study together outside the classroom, providing a tighter sense of community and boosting academic success. Among these is the Music Living-Learning Community in Nell Dossett Hall, where Kristina Taylor and Estreya Whitney (pictured) take time to practice in the warm, relaxed setting of the lobby.

Sherrod Library

The Sherrod Library boasts a multitude of great study spots! There are open study spaces and individual study rooms on every floor. Group study rooms may be reserved on three floors, and both assigned and unassigned graduate student study spaces are also available. Pick up a cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate at ETSU’s newly opened Dunkin’ on the first floor, and hit the books!

Archives of Appalachia

Tucked away on the fourth floor of the Sherrod Library is a quiet spot with a lovely view. Visit ETSU’s Archives of Appalachia and take a seat in one of the rocking chairs in front of the large picture windows. Be warned, though – the view might distract you from your studies!

D.P. Culp Student Center

Seating and gathering spaces abound throughout the D.P. Culp Student Center, from the seating area in front of the large fireplace near Starbucks on the first floor to the Dining Hall on the third. Meet your friends for group study, or come by yourself and find a nice spot to enjoy a warm beverage and some food as you focus on your work.
