East Tennessee State University is one of the best colleges in the nation to work for, according to the Great Colleges to Work For® program.

The results, released on Sept. 20 in a special insert of The Chronicle of Higher Education, are based on a survey of 216 colleges and universities. In all, 75 of those institutions achieved “Great College to Work For®” recognition for specific best practices and policies. Results are reported for small, medium, and large institutions, with ETSU included among the large universities with 10,000 or more students.

ETSU won honors in three categories this year:

  • Confidence in Senior Leadership
  • Shared Governance
  • Faculty Experience

“Our institution is undergoing an exciting transformation driven by the hard work and dedication of our faculty and staff to implement the strategic plan endorsed by the ETSU Board of Trustees,” said ETSU President Dr. Brian Noland. “Their engagement has been critical as we prioritize salary enhancements, strengthen our commitment to shared governance and ensure that people come first in all we do.

“These efforts are leading to remarkable achievements, including record new student enrollment and unprecedented investments in research. The Great Colleges to Work For® designation is a testament to the thriving community we are building together, making our university an outstanding place to work,” Noland added.

Earlier this year, ETSU was also listed on Forbes magazine’s list of America’s Best Employers for Women and one of America’s Best-in-State Employers

The Great Colleges to Work For® results are based on a two-part assessment process: an institution questionnaire that captures employment data and workplace policies from each institution, and a survey administered to faculty, administrators, and professional support staff. The primary factor in deciding whether an institution received recognition was the employee feedback.

The Great Colleges to Work For® program is one of the largest and most respected workplace-recognition programs in the country.
