Some of Broadway’s most unforgettable melodies will fill the East Tennessee State University Martin Center for the Arts later this month as ETSU students pay tribute to one of America’s greatest composers Stephen Sondheim.
On Sunday, April 27, at 3 p.m., the ETSU Departments of Theatre and Dance and Music will present “The Music of Stephen Sondheim” in the ETSU Foundation Grand Hall. The performance will feature selections from a range of Sondheim’s best-known musicals, including “Company,” “Into the Woods,” “Sweeney Todd” and “Sunday in the Park with George.”
Students studying musical theatre will perform alongside the full ETSU Orchestra, offering audiences a sweeping and emotional journey through Sondheim’s rich and complex songbook.
“This collaboration offers a powerful learning experience for our students and an afternoon of unforgettable music for the audience,” said Karen Brewster, chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance. “It’s an exciting chance to showcase the next generation of performers interpreting some of the greatest works in musical theatre.”
Known for his intricate lyrics, sophisticated melodies and emotionally resonant storytelling, Sondheim helped redefine American musical theatre. His work continues to inspire artists and audiences alike – and this concert brings his legacy to life through the talents of ETSU’s students and faculty.
“Our music and theatre students have worked incredibly hard to bring these iconic songs to life,” said Dr. Alan Stevens, chair of the Department of Music. “Sondheim’s music is complex, moving and inspiring. This production is a great example of what’s possible when our departments come together in creative collaboration.”
