Data Analyst

Role Description

Responsible for data analytics. This position may supervise the work of others; however, this is secondary to the primary function of the role. Competencies for this role are usually gained through formal education, specialized training, and/or experience in a program or specialty area specific to the position responsibilities. Specialized and progressively responsible experience is required as the level increases. 

Typical Functions:

Compiles, analyzes, and manages a variety of data through the use of statistical analysis and data interpretation.
Creates reports and presentations to assist in decision-making processes.
Synthesizes data from multiple sources.
Determines the most appropriate way to display data.
Presents findings to management, researchers, and stakeholders.
Writes queries to extract and gather data.
Manages databases.
Identifies data trends and outliers.
Identifies errors and discrepancies in data and data collection procedures.
Audits data.
Evaluates current and future data needs and implements procedures and best practices to ensure data quality.
Completes special projects.
Develops and delivers training.
Coaches, mentors, supervises and/or provides work direction to program and/or project staff.

Levels

Data Analyst 1 Assignments are clearly defined, but work is carried out independently. Analyzes and interprets data, identifies areas of concern, and recognizes when there is a problem. Writes queries to extract and gather data. Analyzes data and creates models, spreadsheets, graphics, reports, and presentations. Maintains data integrity. Education/Experience: Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Advanced degree preferred. Applicable certification may be required.

Data Analyst 2 Works on complex issues requiring in-depth analysis of variable factors. Selects methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results consistent with broadly defined policies, procedures, practices, and professional standards. Uses innovative solutions to solve problems, and modifies solutions when competing policies are present. Exercises latitude to determine objectives. Performs complex data analysis which includes advanced modeling methods. Leads projects within an area of specialty. Designs and develops tools and applications for data collection and reporting. Independently presents findings to internal and external stakeholders. Creates reports which have an impact on policies or initiatives. Consults with clients to understand needs and develops tools to collect data or delivers data reports with requested information. Education/Experience: Typically requires an advanced degree in a relevant field and two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Applicable certification may be required.

Data Analyst 3 Senior-level individual contributor working on complex interrelated data projects. Independently works in complex and strategic areas. Analyzes and evaluates courses of action and make independent decisions. Focuses on short- and long-term strategies. Establishes and implements strategic projects. Conducts and supervises complex analytical studies and projects. Makes recommendations to management, researchers, and stakeholders from data analysis that has far-reaching implications. Establishes and implements standards, policies, and procedures with regards to data access and security. Collaborates with others to enhance systems and databases. Education/Experience: Typically requires an advanced degree in a relevant field and four years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. PhD preferred. Applicable certification may be required.
