IT Administrator/Analyst

Role Description

Responsible for providing support and collaboration for the design, development, testing, maintenance, documentations, and administration of projects and solutions. Creates solutions to problems identified by university stakeholders and partners. Responsible for the delivery of service, administration of projects, and the design of solutions. May supervise the work of others; however, this is a secondary function of the role. Competencies for this role are usually gained through formal education, specialized training, and/or experience in a program or specialty area specific to the position responsibilities.

Typical Functions:

Creates documentation and testing plans.
Works on project teams to develop and implement projects.
Develops and conducts training.
Provides support after project implementation.
Mentors and provides work direction to others.
Supervises work of staff and project teams.

Administrator
Supports the design and implementation of systems.
Creates documentation of processes for quality control.
Identifies issues with systems.

Analyst
Plans, designs, analyzes and implements systems.
Writes programs and develops software.
Provides support for vendor products to address internal needs.
Develops programs to extract data from a variety of systems.
Creates and configures products in the background for multiple systems to ensure they function simultaneously for end users.
Creates testing plans.

Levels

IT Administrator/Analyst 1

Independently analyzes technical problems and implements solutions in collaboration with higher-level staff or supervisor.
Maintains, deploys, designs, tests, and leads small scope projects, software and/or systems under the direction of senior staff. (Small scope typically refers to a project or system with a small user base, lower impact, and more routine in nature. Simple to moderately difficult programs or solutions that may be part of a larger information system.)
Performs diverse activities requiring analysis and judgment in alignment with broad principles, practices, and professional standards.
Work is guided by objectives and expected outcomes with limited direction; refers new or complex problems to a higher level.
Analyzes and interprets data, identifies areas of concern, and recognizes when there is a problem.
Determines compliance within policies and procedures.

Education/Experience:

Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and one year of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Applicable certification may be preferred.

IT Administrator/Analyst 2

Independently analyzes and solves complex technical problems.
Maintains, deploys, designs, tests, and leads medium to large scope projects under the direction of senior staff. (Medium to large scope typically refers to a project or system with large user base, medium impact, or moderate to advanced-level programs or solutions that may be part of a larger information system.)
Develops, implements, and supports projects that satisfy a variety of user needs.
Works with vendors/campus project partners to help define needs and integrate products that meet University needs.
Manages licenses for purchased products and software.
Uses innovative solutions to solve problems and modifies solutions when competing policies are present.

Education/Experience:

Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Applicable certification may be preferred.

IT Administrator/Analyst 3

Independently analyzes and solves highly complex technical problems.
Leads, modifies, deploys, implements, designs, tests, and manages critical, high impact, or urgent projects.
Leads project teams to develop and implement projects and software which includes planning, managing resources, communicating progress, and delivering final products.
Provides work direction to employees and manages large service areas or systems.
Researches emerging technologies and/or threats and provides training.
Based on university needs, determines if technical solutions should be purchased or created in house for highly complex projects.
Works with campus project partners to help define needs, often across multiple functional areas.
Interacts with external vendors and contractors for technical solutions.
Selects methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results consistent with broadly defined policies, procedures, practices, and professional standards.
Uses innovative solutions to solve problems and modifies solutions when competing policies are present.
Exercises latitude to determine objectives.

Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and three years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Applicable certification may be preferred.

IT Administrator/Analyst 4

Senior-level expert performing specialized functions.
Leads the analysis and problem solving for the most complex and mission critical systems and implements solutions by planning, managing resources, communicating progress, and delivering final products.
Responsible for functions that have the greatest impact to the university and budgets.
Supervises employees and/or manages work teams, sometimes with conflicting priorities.
Defines scope of objectives for projects based on user needs.
Interacts with external vendors and contractors to develop solutions.
Researches emerging technologies and threats, implements solutions, and provides training.
Designs, collects, analyzes metrics, and creates reports for dissemination to senior staff.
Focuses on short- and long-term strategic planning and contributes to the identification of areas for development.
