Role Description
Responsible for providing leadership, direction, training, and management for information technology operations of a department, division, college, institute, campus, or system wide. Provides senior-level strategic expertise and guidance along with increased accountability. Management level roles have the management and development of people as a major accountability. This role accomplishes goals through overseeing their areas of responsibility, planning, managing resources, prioritizing, and directing the responsibilities of employees.
Typical Functions:
Manages operations; including staff supervision and development, leadership, and project
prioritization.
Aligns staff with projects and ensures they are completed on time and on budget.
Partners with leadership to develop new programs or services upon identification of
challenges.
Develops and implements procedures.
Manages relationships with external and internal clients and vendors.
Works in collaboration and consults with managers in other areas.
Identifies opportunities and oversees the implementation of new programs consistent
with unit direction.
Participates in the university planning process and determines facility IT accommodations
and needs.
Ensures compliance within policies and procedures.
Levels
IT Management 1Manages operations of a technical area by performing diverse activities requiring
analysis and judgment in alignment with broad principles, practices, and professional
standards. Education/Experience:Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and five years of relevant, progressively responsible experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Advanced degree may be preferred. Applicable certification may be preferred. |
IT Management 2Manages the operations and budget of a large unit or multiple smaller units within
a large department. Education/Experience:Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and seven years of relevant, progressively responsible experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Advanced degree may be preferred. Applicable certification may be preferred. |
IT Management 3Provides leadership to a large group of cross-functional teams. Education/Experience:Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and nine years of relevant, progressively responsible experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Advanced degree may be preferred. Applicable certification may be preferred. |
IT Management 4Serves as the campus leader and advocate for information technology, with responsibility for planning, coordinating, and implementing a comprehensive technology environment for both academic and administrative computing systems and, the integration of technology into the teaching and learning process. Develops, implements, and manages strategic and operational plans in alignment with the System, the institution and unit goals and budgets. Education/Experience:Typically requires an advanced degree in a relevant field and two to four years of relevant, progressively responsible experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Advanced degree may be preferred. Applicable certification may be preferred. |
IT Management 5Provides leadership required to support the System mission and to further the strategies needed to achieve goals outlined in the strategic framework. Creates an environment that promotes collaboration, and works effectively and persuasively with key leaders at all institutions, members of the Board of Trustees, and senior leaders in the System. Provides the University leaders and the Board of Trustees with guidance, strategic thinking, and general information on all areas of System information technology and security activities; this includes developing reports and information for the Board and senior leadership as necessary and presenting periodically. Education/Experience:Doctoral degree in computer science or related area of concentration with five to seven years experience of upper level management of Information Technology Services, preferably in a higher education setting required. |
