Role Description
Responsible for providing strategic leadership for all functions of the library/museum in collaboration with other academic units. Manages budgets and provides expertise and analysis for long-range strategic planning. Management level roles have the management and development of people as a major accountability. This role accomplishes goals through overseeing areas of responsibility, planning, managing resources, prioritizing, and directing the responsibilities of employees.
Typical Functions:
Responsible for the operational management, administrative direction, and coordination
of staff and activities of the library or museum unit.
Participates and leads strategic planning and staffing decisions.
Responsible for entire initiatives, projects, or processes.
Accountable for setting goals and objectives for the work of others to achieve operational
objectives.
Aligns staff work plans with overall strategies and goals.
Identifies/manages external clients/partners to generate revenue, financial support,
or media exposure.
Responsible for policy development and implementation.
Provides in-depth specialized research and instructional services.
Provides expert analysis and guidance in evaluation, selection, and implementation
of new programs, collections, processes, and technologies.
Levels
Library/Museum Management 1Responsible for the operational management, administrative direction, and coordination
of staff and activities of a library or museum unit, or a subunit within a large unit. Education/Experience:Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and four years of relevant, progressively responsible experience, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience. Master’s degree preferred. Applicable certification may be required. |
Library/Museum Management 2Responsible for the operational management, administrative direction, training, and
coordination of staff and activities of multiple library or museum units, or a unit
with multiple specialized functional areas. Education/Experience:Typically requires an advanced degree in a relevant field and five years of relevant, progressively responsible experience, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience. Applicable certification may be required. |
Library/Museum Management 3Provides senior-level leadership that is responsible for the operational management,
administrative direction, and coordination of staff and activities of a large and
complex library or museum unit with multiple specialized functional areas. Education/Experience:Typically requires an advanced degree in a relevant field and six years of relevant, progressively responsible experience, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience. Applicable certification may be required. |
Library/Museum Management 4In addition to responsibilities of level 3, provides senior-level leadership that is responsible for the operational management, administrative direction, and coordination of staff and activities of multiple libraries and museums. Education/Experience:Typically requires an advanced degree in a relevant field and seven years of relevant, progressively responsible experience, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience. Applicable certification may be required. |
