Medical Nursing

Role Description
Responsible for supporting medical functions by implementing physician’s orders. This role has increased accountability that requires professional nursing preparation and expert healthcare services; the scope of practice is determined by legislation and is regulated by a healthcare professional or council. This role is not responsible for specialty, senior level strategic expertise, management responsibilities, and absolute accountability. This role may oversee the work of others and/or manage processes and programs; however, this is a secondary function of the job. Competencies for this role are usually gained through formal education and/or certification, specialized training, and/or experience in a program or specialty area specific to the position responsibilities.
Typical Functions:
Provides patient care by making patient assessments, triaging concerns, and preparing
patients for exams or treatments.
Assists with performing diagnostic tests and analyzing results.
Records patients’ medical histories and symptoms, including observations, health promotion
recommendations, and methods of disease prevention.
Administers medicine and treatments to patients.
Operates and monitors medical equipment.
Teaches patients or other responsible parties how to manage medical conditions and
post-treatment care.
Confers and collaborates with supervising healthcare professionals.
Serves as a resource of information and guidance.
Supports teaching efforts by instructing students, interns, and residents either on
the job or in a classroom setting.
Ensures patient understanding of proper medication dosage, administration, and disease
treatment.
Supports research efforts by conducting research or training and assisting researchers.
Maintains knowledge by staying up to date with current research, practice, and treatment
through continuing education.
Documents medical data in patient charts.
Levels
Nurse 1Staff Nurse Research Nurse Education/Experience:Typically requires an associate’s degree in a relevant field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and one year of experience in a hospital or private practice is preferred. Licensed Registered Nurse. |
Nurse 2Nurse Supervisor Research Nurse Coordinator Education/Experience:Typically requires an associate’s degree in relevant field and two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is preferred. |
Nurse 3Nurse Manager Research Nurse Manager Education/Experience:Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in relevant field and four years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Advanced degree preferred. Supervisory experience required. Applicable certifications/licensures required. |

Nurse PractitonerOperates with significant independence. Tennessee license from the State Board of Nursing for Advanced Nursing Practice. Valid prescriptive authority required. Accredited to practice as a Nurse Practitioner (APN License preferred) |
Nurse Practitoner - SpecialtyPerforms work of nurse practitioner in a discrete area of medicine. Education/Experience:Typically requires an advanced degree in a relevant field and two years of clinical primary care experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Tennessee license from the State Board of Nursing for Advanced Nursing Practice. Valid prescriptive authority required. Accredited to practice as a Nurse Practitioner (APN License preferred). Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner by ANCC or AANP/ Current DEA certification or other specialty Nurse Practitioner certification. |
