Role Description

Responsible for providing advanced to expert level health care services, leadership, and direction within the university, healthcare centers, and during academic training, research, and administration. The Medical Professional role may provide oversight and support for employees, students, or community-related activities and operations. This highly skilled role is responsible for determining, recommending, and administering the improvement of health through prevention, diagnosis, curation, and treatment of disease, injury, illness, and physical/mental deficiencies within patients. This role is responsible for expertise in a specialized area, has increased accountability, and requires specialized and/or advanced educations in a medical field of study.

Typical Functions:


Develops, directs, coordinates, and implements evaluations, programs, curricula, and visits to include policies and procedures.
Conducts community, laboratory, or clinical-based research projects.
Trains, guides, and instructs residents, faculty, and other staff on patient care.
Plans, writes, and manages grants from various funding sources.
Performs activities related to the delivery of wellness and healthcare services.
Responsible for data management, including collecting, analyzing, and monitoring.
Analyzes test findings.
Provides therapeutic interventions for home or clinic.
Provides treatment plans and follow-up services to clients.
Educates participants individually and by group counseling.
Provides healthcare training programs.
Coordinates client care with local and state agencies.
Provides in-home counseling interventions.
Provides work direction to students and volunteers.
Provides supervision, oversight, and mentoring to residents.
Maintains medical records.

Levels

Medical Clinical Professional 1

Dietician
Advises and counsels others on food and nutrition.
Explains nutrition issues to clients, assesses the dietary and health needs, develops meal plans, gauges the effects of these meal plans, promotes nutrition through public speaking and community outreach programs, and keeps abreast of the latest research in nutrition and food sciences.

Mental Health Counselor
Counsels individuals on mental and emotional health.
Helps individuals deal with issues such as substance abuse and addictions; family, marital, and parenting problems; stress management; self-esteem; and aging.

Nutritionist
Advises and counsels on food and healthy eating.
Unlike dieticians, nutritionists typically work with healthy people.
Educates individuals or groups in forming policy to shape nutritional advice.
Researches and studies the relationship between nutrients and the body’s functions.

Speech/Language Pathologist
Assesses, diagnoses, and treats speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders in children and adults.

Education/Experience:

Dietician
Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and one year of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Applicable licensure/certification required.


Mental Health Counselor
Typically requires an advanced degree in a relevant field. Applicable licensure/certification required.


Nutritionist
Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and one year of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Applicable licensure/certification required.


Speech/Language Pathologist
Typically requires an advanced degree and applicable internship, residency, and training. Applicable licensure/certification required.

Medical Clinical Professional 2

Dietician Supervisor
Supervises dieticians who counsel others on food and nutrition.
Explains nutrition issues to clients, assesses the dietary and health needs, develop meal plans, gauge the effects of these meal plans, promote nutrition through public speaking and community outreach programs, and keep abreast of the latest research in nutrition and food sciences.

Occupational Therapist
Treats injured, ill, or disabled patients through the therapeutic use of everyday activities.
Helps patients develop, recover, improve, as well as maintain the skills needed for daily living and working.

Physical Therapist
Diagnoses and treats medical disorders or other health-related conditions that limit a person’s abilities to move and perform functional activities in their daily lives.

Psychologist
Studies the human mind from a scientific perspective to understand human behavior.
Provides assessments and recommendations for treatment to treat behavioral disorders.
Does not prescribe medication.

Education/Experience:

Dietician Supervisor
Typically requires an advanced degree in a relevant field and two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Applicable licensure/certification required.


Occupational Therapist
Typically requires an advanced degree in a relevant field and applicable internship, residency, and training. Applicable licensure/certification required.


Physical Therapist
Typically requires a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree and applicable internship, residency, and training. Applicable licensure/certification required.


Psychologist
Typically requires a Doctor of Psychology and applicable internship, residency, and training. Applicable licensure/certification required.

Pharmacist
Dispenses and compounds prescription medications.
Provides pharmaceutical information to patients and healthcare professionals to ensure the safe use of medications.

Education/Experience:

Pharmacist
Typically requires a Doctor of Pharmacy degree and applicable internship, residency, and training. Applicable licensure/certification required.

Medical Clinical Professional 4

Dentist
Examines, diagnoses, and treats diseases, injuries, and malformations of teeth and gums.

Psychiatrist
Evaluates, diagnoses, and treats patients with mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders.
Prescribes medication to patients and evaluate treatment results.

Physician
Diagnoses and treats injuries and illnesses.
Examines patients, prescribes medications, and interprets diagnostic tests.

Education/Experience:

Dentist
Typically requires a Doctor of Dental Medicine and/or Doctor of Dental Surgery degree and applicable internship, residency, and training. Applicable licensure/certification required. 


Psychiatrist
Typically requires a Doctor of Medicine and applicable internship, residency, and training. Applicable licensure/certification required.


Physician
Typically requires a Doctor of Medicine and applicable internship, residency, and training. Applicable licensure/certification required.

Forensic Pathologist
Examines the body post-mortem to determine the cause of death.

Education/Experience:

Forensic Pathologist
