Medical Technical Specialist
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): Knowledge of a medical specialty area. Knowledge of applicable regulations, policies, and procedures. Knowledge of applicable complex medical equipment and instruments. Excellent customer service skills. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Role Description
Responsible for performing specialized medical functions and tasks that require specialized equipment and knowledge under the supervision of a medical provider. This role does not provide direct patient care. This role may oversee the work of others and/or manage processes and programs; however, this is a secondary function of the job. Competencies for this role are usually gained through formal education and/or certification, specialized training, and/or experience in a program or specialty area specific to the position responsibilities.
Typical Functions:
Cleans, repairs, and maintains equipment and medical areas.
Operates medical instruments and equipment.
Enters and extracts information from electronic systems.
Receives, stocks, and maintains supply inventories, which may include, but are not
limited to controlled substances, vaccinations, and testing supplies.
Completes medical orders for testing and fills and prepares prescriptions.
Calculates dosages.
Responds to questions from patients and their representatives.
Prepares reports and manages records.
Performs quality control and calibration procedures.
Performs services and analysis requiring the application of specialized training.
Instructs, positions, and prepares patients for procedures, imaging, and tests.
Receives, prepares, and obtains specimens, medical materials, and remains for procedures,
analyses, or testing.
Identifies tests to be performed.
Prepares solutions, reagents, supplies, and equipment for use.
Reads and interprets test results where authorized.
Records and disseminates results.
Performs quality control and calibration procedures and maintains quality control
records.
Levels
Medical Technical Specialist 1Performs routine, standardized, well-defined tasks following standard policies and
guidelines. Education/Experience:Typically requires relevant medical education in the area of specialty and relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Certification in a relevant specialty required. |
Medical Technical Specialist 2Work is performed under the supervision of an advanced level medical provider. Education/Experience:Typically requires relevant medical education in the area of specialty and two years of relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Certification in a relevant specialty required. |
Medical Technical Specialist 3Work is performed under the review of the supervisor. Education/Experience:Typically requires relevant medical education in the area of specialty and two years of relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
