Role Description
Responsible for providing specialized public safety services, and interprets and applies laws, policies, and procedures. This role requires specialized education, training, and/or experience. Employees in these roles must pass a background investigation, perform shift work, and adhere to physical and training standards. Police personnel are sworn officers with full powers of arrest for their jurisdiction and are responsible for enforcing federal, state, local, and university laws and regulations.
Typical Functions:
Enforces federal, state, local laws, and university policies by deciding which guidelines
are most effective from those available.
Patrols assigned areas to detect and deter crime.
Responds to calls for service.
Conducts investigations.
Apprehends, arrests, and files charges on suspects.
Completes incident reports.
Utilizes databases to enter information.
Regulates traffic and enforces traffic violations.
Prepares and presents testimony in court.
Performs community engagement functions.
Trains new officers and identifies ongoing training needs.
Levels
Public Safety Police OfficerActs as an on-scene incident commander. Education/Experience:Typically requires a high school diploma or the equivalent. POST (Peace Officer Standards Training) certified, or the ability to obtain certification within 6 months of hire. Valid driver’s license required. |
Public Safety Police SpecialistPerforms all duties of the Police Officer, in addition, serves in a specialized functional
area. Education/Experience:Typically requires a high school diploma and two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. POST (Peace Officer Standards Training) certified. Valid driver’s license required. |
Public Safety Police CorporalPerforms all duties of Police Officer, in addition, serves as a supervisor. Education/Experience:Typically requires a high school diploma and two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. POST (Peace Officer Standards Training) certified. Valid driver’s license required. |
Public Safety Police SergeantSupervises and assigns work to others. Education/Experience:Typically requires a high school diploma and three years of relevant, progressively responsible experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. POST (Peace Officer Standards Training) certified. Valid driver’s license required. |
Public Safety Police LieutenantOversees operations of a police unit; including supervision of managers and staff.
