Role Description

Responsible for providing specialized public safety services, and interprets and applies laws, policies, and procedures. This role requires specialized education, training, and/or experience. Employees in these roles must pass a background investigation, perform shift work, and adhere to physical and training standards. Police personnel are sworn officers with full powers of arrest for their jurisdiction and are responsible for enforcing federal, state, local, and university laws and regulations.

Typical Functions:

Enforces federal, state, local laws, and university policies by deciding which guidelines are most effective from those available.
Patrols assigned areas to detect and deter crime.
Responds to calls for service.
Conducts investigations.
Apprehends, arrests, and files charges on suspects.
Completes incident reports.
Utilizes databases to enter information.
Regulates traffic and enforces traffic violations.
Prepares and presents testimony in court.
Performs community engagement functions.
Trains new officers and identifies ongoing training needs.

Levels

Public Safety Police Officer Acts as an on-scene incident commander. Performs functions in a specialty area. Education/Experience: Typically requires a high school diploma or the equivalent. POST (Peace Officer Standards Training) certified, or the ability to obtain certification within 6 months of hire. Valid driver’s license required.

Public Safety Police Specialist Performs all duties of the Police Officer, in addition, serves in a specialized functional area. Develops and administers programs in a specialty area. Assesses and identifies training needs and develops and delivers curriculum in specialty area. Education/Experience: Typically requires a high school diploma and two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. POST (Peace Officer Standards Training) certified. Valid driver’s license required.

Public Safety Police Corporal Performs all duties of Police Officer, in addition, serves as a supervisor. Supervises and assigns work to others. Receives and relays directives, assignments, and special orders to subordinate staff. Manages shift or section operations. Education/Experience: Typically requires a high school diploma and two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. POST (Peace Officer Standards Training) certified. Valid driver’s license required.

Public Safety Police Sergeant Supervises and assigns work to others. Creates work schedules and is responsible for performance management. Analyzes data, statistics, and trends. Creates and provides input to departmental planning. Performs other miscellaneous administrative functions as necessary. Performs functions of a police officer as a secondary function. Education/Experience: Typically requires a high school diploma and three years of relevant, progressively responsible experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. POST (Peace Officer Standards Training) certified. Valid driver’s license required.

Public Safety Police Lieutenant Oversees operations of a police unit; including supervision of managers and staff. Assists with challenging, sensitive situations. Provides operational supervision for critical incidents. Creates and implements crime prevention strategies and training plans. Provides group and individual training. Creates complex reports and proposals. Education/Experience: Typically requires a high school diploma and five years of relevant, progressively responsible experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Bachelor’s degree preferred. POST (Peace Officer Standards Training) certified. Valid driver’s license required.

Public Safety Police Deputy Chief Oversees operations of a police unit; including supervision of managers and staff. Assists with challenging, sensitive situations. Provides operational supervision for critical incidents. Creates and implements crime prevention strategies and training plans. Provides group and individual training. Creates complex reports and proposals. Education/Experience: Typically requires a high school diploma and five years of relevant, progressively responsible experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
