RESEARCHER
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): Knowledge in a field of research. Knowledge of research or lab equipment, materials, and processes related to lab/facility operations. Knowledge of procedures for experimentation, observation, documentation, and data collection.
Role Description
Responsible for either planning, maintaining, or completing all phases of research programs and/or projects and related activities involved in the discovery of new knowledge, techniques, materials, and concepts, which require fundamental scientific, research, or engineering knowledge, skills, and abilities achieved by professional preparation. Levels are distinguished based on autonomy, complexity, and proven expertise.
Typical Functions:
Develops or assists in the development of complex research proposals, plans, and protocols.
Designs, conducts, modifies, and sets up experiments, studies, and investigations.
Conducts experiments, studies, and investigations.
Collects, records, compiles, processes, analyzes, and interprets data/samples.
Designs and manages research databases.
Designs mechanisms to collect data.
Conducts literature reviews.
Performs statistical analysis and develops statistical models.
Documents and interprets results.
Prepares internal reports and external publications for peer review.
Delivers presentations on research.
Evaluates data and outcomes and suggests alternative research methods, and modifies,
or develops new procedures and techniques.
Develops project and grant proposals and assists with securing funding.
Performs cost analyses and makes budget recommendations.
Coordinates research logistics such as equipment management; organizing materials,
supplies and labor needs.
Manages labs and ensures safety compliance.
Develops novel methods for research using computer programming and applications, model
building, and database development.
Provides work direction or supervision to students and other research staff.
Levels
Researcher 1Provides professional and lead technical support to research programs and projects. Education/Experience:Typically requires a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and three years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. |
Researcher 2Provides professional contributions to research programs and projects requiring specialized
knowledge and experience. Education/Experience:Typically requires an advanced degree in a relevant field and two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. |
Researcher 3Provides professional contributions to research programs and requires expertise in
the field of study. Education/Experience:Typically requires an advanced degree in a relevant field and five years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. PhD or equivalent terminal degree may be required. |
Researcher 4Functions as an independent researcher or a collaborator on a multi-faceted research
initiative and/or has lead responsibility for components of a larger research program
under the general direction of a senior or principal researcher; sometimes functioning
as a principal investigator. Education/Experience:Typically requires a PhD or an equivalent terminal degree in a relevant field and three years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. May require a proven record of peer-reviewed publications. |
Researcher 5Responsible for leading highly complex, specialized, or multifaceted research projects
often as the principal investigator. Education/Experience:Typically requires a PhD or equivalent terminal degree in a relevant field and five years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. May require substantial research and publication record and scholarly recognition. |
