TEACHING AND LEARNING ACCESSIBILITY SPECIALIST

Role Description

Responsible for providing interpreting, translating, or transcribing services for individuals with disabilities by providing access for hearing impaired students in courses and other university-sponsored activities.

Typical Functions:

Provides real-time sign language interpreting for hearing-impaired students during lectures, discussions, and university-sponsored activities.
Creates written transcriptions of spoken content from lectures, meetings, and events to ensure access for students with hearing impairments.
Evaluates and recommends appropriate assistive technologies to enhance accessibility for students with disabilities.
Works with instructors to ensure course materials and presentations are accessible, providing guidance on inclusive teaching practices.
Advocates for the rights and needs of students with disabilities, ensuring they receive appropriate accommodations and support.

Levels

Teaching and Learning Accessibility Specialist 1 Provides transcribing services for individuals with disabilities. Prepares for assignments by reviewing course information to learn vocabulary, technical terminology, and to understand concepts. Reads, analyzes, and annotates textbooks, course material, articles, and other pertinent information in preparation of class. Updates and maintains frequently used terminology to transcription program for abbreviation. Listens to lectures and discussions to find meaning of messages and delivers communications to the client transcribing technology allowing students to assimilate content and participate in lectures. Reviews transcriptions, edits for errors, highlights important information, and uploads to server. Troubleshoots issues that arise in classroom. Ensures communications are in compliance with legal, university, and professional standards. Education/Experience: Typically requires a high school diploma and three years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Applicable certification may be preferred.

Teaching and Learning Accessibility Specialist 2 Provides interpreting and/or transliterating services for individuals with disabilities. Provides access in courses and other university-sponsored activities. Prepares for assignments by reviewing course information to learn vocabulary, technical terminology, and to understand concepts. Reads and analyzes textbooks, course material, articles, and other pertinent information prior to class. Listens to lectures and discussions, finds meaning of message, organizes concepts and delivers communications to the client via sign language while monitoring feedback and comprehension. Works with others to make sure programmatic content is accessible to all audiences (i.e. graduation ceremonies, guest lectures, town halls, etc). Troubleshoots issues that arise in classroom. Adheres to applicable code of conduct and ethics. Education/Experience: Typically requires a high school diploma and five years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Applicable certification may be preferred.
