Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in executing maintenance and repair of automotive, construction, and maintenance equipment both gasoline and diesel powered and performing related work as required.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Performs general overhaul and repair work on light and heavy vehicles, gasoline and diesel motors, tractors, buses and other mechanical equipment.
Performs such repair and maintenance as removing heads, relining brakes, replacing clutches, rebuilding and replacing starters and generators, changing oil filters, tuning engines, and repairing and replacing flat tires.
Uses diagnostic equipment in repair of motor vehicles and equipment.
Schedules regular maintenance for all state-owned vehicles and equipment.
Picks up supplies, equipment, and parts.
Maintains shop records and reports.
Performs other work as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of standard practices and equipment of the automotive mechanic trade.
Knowledge of the principles and operation of motor vehicles and equipment.
Knowledge of the repair and maintenance of motor vehicles, construction equipment, and maintenance equipment.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
Ability to perform a variety of repair and maintenance tasks.
Ability to use the necessary tools and the required skill.
Ability to operate a variety of light and heavy equipment.
Ability to perform manual labor.
Ability to understand written and oral instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Successful completion of the tenth grade. Experience in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
