Definition
Employees in this class are under general direction. Work performed in supervising the daily operations of the steam plant; performing necessary inspections, maintenance and repair of the boilers and related equipment and performing related work as required.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Insures that the proper chemical balance in the water is maintained.
Cleans and directs others in cleaning boilers and auxiliary equipment, using scrapers, wire brushes and cleaning solvent.
Inspects and repairs boiler fittings such as safety valves, regulators, automatic control mechanisms, water columns, and auxiliary machines.
Replaces damaged boiler tubes and plates.
Repairs or replaces high pressure piping.
Performs other work as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of the materials, methods, and principles used in the maintenance and repair of boilers and related equipment.
Knowledge of the use, care, and maintenance of required tools and equipment both specialized and common.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision.
Ability to assign, supervise, and inspect the work of others.
Ability to use and operate a variety of tools and equipment required in the performance of duties.
Ability to evaluate situations and make decisions.
Ability to express ideas clearly, concisely and convincingly.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Graduation from a standard high school. Experience in the operation and repair of high pressure boilers.
