Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in bookstore sales both on and off campus, and performing related work as required.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Prepares purchase orders or requisitions for bookstore items such as cosmetics, greeting cards, jewelry, etc.
Verifies that items delivered are the items ordered to ensure correct billing and payment.
Operates cash register and assists customers in locating and selecting merchandise both on and off bookstore premises, i.e. administration building and other campus locations.
Conducts and verifies inventories.
Receives telephone calls, answers inquiries and/or transfers calls to appropriate bookstore employees.
Prepares promotions to facilitate student, faculty and administration awareness of the bookstore's diverse selection of merchandise.
Travels with promotional sets and/or textbooks and supplies to other campus locations.
Performs related work as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of inventory techniques and methods.
Knowledge of ordering, receiving, and returning procedures.
Knowledge of business English and arithmetic.
Knowledge of basic merchandising and advertising techniques.
Ability to keep accurate records and files.
Ability to evaluate situations and make decisions.
Ability to effectively communicate in verbal bookstore supplies and services presentations or promotions, over the phone, and in waiting on customers to the bookstore.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public, students, faculty, administrators, and other employees.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Graduation from a standard high school. Experience as a sales clerk and/ or work experience involving public contact in a business setting. Must possess a Tennessee operator license.
