Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in problem diagnosis, scheduling preventative maintenance and vehicle repair and performing related work as required.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Diagnoses problems in vehicles or equipment.
Schedules and assigns or performs general overhaul and repair work on light and heavy vehicles and equipment such as trucks, tractors, backhoes, graders, etc.
Writes repair orders, scheduling vehicles for repairs and preventative maintenance program.
Performs mechanical and electrical work, tune-ups, engine overhauls, repairs and replaces clutches, brakes, etc.
Orders vehicle parts in conjunction with the supervisor.
Maintains shop records and reports.
Performs other work as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of standard practices and equipment of the diesel and gasoline mechanic trade.
Knowledge of the principles of operation of gasoline and diesel engines.
Knowledge of the repair and maintenance of light to heavy trucks and construction equipment.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
Knowledge of the principles and methods of supervision.
Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures and equipment.
Ability to perform a variety of repair and maintenance tasks.
Ability to use the necessary tools and the required skills.
Ability to plan, organize, assign, supervise, and inspect the work of others.
Ability to keep records and make reports.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Graduation from a standard high school. Completion of courses in gasoline and diesel engine repair and maintenance. Considerable experience in the diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of both gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and equipment. Possession of a valid Tennessee operator license as issued by the Tennessee Department of Safety.
