Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed involves a variety of tasks in an ambulatory health care setting, including assisting physicians in all aspects of clinical care, administering injections, performing EKGs, gathering specimens, assisting with special procedures and general workups, and performing other related non-professional nursing and clerical duties as required.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Administers first-aid and nursing care to patients, including medications and simple treatments as ordered.
Assists physician during examinations and during minor surgical procedures.
Administers injections/immunizations.
Assists in triaging patients in the office and over the telephone.
Performs EKGs.
Performs venapunctures and starts IVs.
Records observations of symptoms, reactions, care and treatment given.
Collects specimens for laboratory analysis and performs minor laboratory procedures.
Cleans examination rooms and equipment.
Prepares, operates and cares for clinical equipment.
Schedules patient appointments and obtains new patient information.
Files medical records, correspondence, reports, etc.
Pulls medical records, and charts for physicians and nurses; makes copies of records required.
Inventories and orders supplies and medications.
Performs other related clerical and non-professional nursing duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of the basic principles and practices of nursing.
Knowledge of basic laboratory procedures.
Knowledge of medical terminology.
Knowledge of modern medical office practices, procedures and equipment.
Ability to provide basic nursing care.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the patients, the public and other employees.
Ability to handle confidential patient records in a responsible manner.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. High school graduate; graduate of an accredited associate degree program and certification as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) OR licensed as a Practical Nurse in the State of Tennessee (LPN).
