Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in providing control for construction project development, visiting sites and performing inspections, and managing preventive maintenance and energy conservation programs. Performs other duties as assigned.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Handles administrative aspects of construction contracts from inception to completion of contract; OR coordinates and conducts field engineering aspects of construction contracts.
Assists in planning each year's operating budget.
Attends pre-construction and bids conferences with contractors, architects, engineers, etc.
Reads blueprints, specifications, contracts, diagrams, etc.
Calculates costs of man hours, materials, services, etc.
Performs daily construction inspections.
Ensures compliance with various codes, standards, guidelines, etc. by contractors.
Confers with architects or contractors regarding time schedules, priorities, inspection dates, etc.
Coordinates with various offices or agencies to obtain parking permits, street closings, etc.
Authorizes payment for work done or services performed as a function of percent of job completed.
Writes correspondence and compiles various forms.
Maintains filing system.
Manages preventive maintenance and energy conservation programs.
Compiles historical data on equipment and systems.
Supervises student workers performing special projects.
Designs or recommends changes to existing or proposed systems to improve or extend capabilities or to increase efficiency.
Drives sedan or pickup truck.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Ability to attend to details.
Skill in preparing graphics.
Knowledge of properties of building materials and construction techniques.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
Ability to express ideas in writing and verbally.
Ability to identify skills, abilities, and performance deficiencies of subordinates.
Ability to work independently and without supervision.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. High school graduate or equivalent; completion of an apprenticeship program or two years toward an engineering or architectural degree: OR a community or junior college degree in construction technology; plus three years experience as a construction contractor, supervisor or craftsman; good physical condition.
