Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in preparing and cooking food which may or may not be part of a training program in a Cafeteria; cooking more simple food items on grill to be used in cafeteria menu; maintaining sanitation of the kitchen and cooking equipment; and performing related work as required.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Cooks food items on a grill for use in Cafeteria servings, including hamburgers, steaks, and french fries, as directed by other cooks and lead workers.
Prepares and cooks desserts, salads, meats, and vegetables, or assists more experienced cooks in such work.
Seasons and tastes food for quality.
Receives and inspects food supplies for use in menu items.
May also bake for portion of time.
Performs other work as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of modern methods, materials, and equipment used in food service.
Knowledge with respect to health hazards in food preparation and precautionary measures.
Knowledge of modern cooking techniques.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the students, public and other employees.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Completion of the eighth grade. Some experience in food service operation. Applicants should possess a current health card issued by the County Health Department.
