Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in compounding chemicals and reagents; following and enforcing all safety regulations; maintain a working, up-to-date inventory of chemicals and supplies; maintaining student laboratory lockers with required equipment; assists in maintaining and repairing equipment; creating and maintaining an electronic inventory of chemicals and equipment; and, performs other related duties as assigned.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Maintains, updates, implements, and enforces appropriate chemical hygiene policies and practices to include reviewing all laboratory procedures, including all new procedures to be introduced; collaborating with administrators and Environmental Health and Safety employees to provide adequate training for all workers regarding safety, chemical hygiene, and chemical hazards; and, ensuring all Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) forms are current and available.
Provides regular, formal chemical hygiene and safety inspections, including, but not limited to stockrooms and store areas, lab ventilation, sinks and other areas of chemical cleanup, and safety and emergency equipment.
Follows and enforces the Department of Chemistry Safety Rules for the undergraduate teaching laboratories and for workers under the position’s supervision including representing safe practices at all times while at work, instructing students and student workers in the use of safe protocols while in the chemistry departments, and preventing unsafe practices by any safe method necessary.
Orders chemicals, gases, and supplies, and arranges for services for Chemistry Department with respect to laboratory related expenses; purchases items for teaching laboratories as needed; completes procurement requests for laboratory related expenses; researches the best price/quality combination; follows up on orders to ensure accuracy and delivery of order; maintains an inventory of all chemicals, supplies, and equipment (updated monthly); coordinates and receives bids on various items in the department; and, reconciles differences with vendors monthly.
Oversees budget in the chemistry department utilizing approved software to determine the balances on all accounts; works closely with departmental executive aide on departmental accounts; and, reconciles the budget monthly with departmental and University records and apprises the Chair of the financial situation.
Serves as a resource person for General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Quantitative Analysis, and Introductory Integrated Laboratory including preparing necessary reagents for labs; ensuring proper reagents and supplies are available at the beginning of the lab; facilitating check-in at the beginning of the semester and checkout at the end of the semester; maintaining and supplying student lockers for undergraduate labs; dispensing unknowns for appropriate teaching labs with confidentiality; and, determining the appropriate protective equipment, and ensuring it is in good working order.
Delivers, picks up, and distributes Chemistry related mail.
Assists, as needed, in replacing and connecting glass cylinders.
Conducts cryogen fills for NMR.
Transports, as needed, chemicals from the Central Storage Facility.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of word processing software and systems (Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word and Excel preferred).

Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Graduation from a standard high school or equivalency required; a bachelor’s degree in a field of science with one year of laboratory experience preferred. Additionally, the position will require an incumbent to obtain certification as a Chemical Hygiene Officer within 18 months of employment.
