Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in preparing detailed drawings according to accepted drafting procedures and performing related work as required. May use computer aided design equipment to perform drafting assignments.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
From rough sketches or description of concept, prepares a variety of technical sketches and drawings, including mechanical, electrical, and architectural details, for research proposals, project reports, publications, and technical presentations in various engineering disciplines.
Prepares preliminary sketches illustrating proposed projects.
Prepares working drawings for approved projects which may include electrical, mechanical, architectural details, etc.
Prepares construction details of cabinets, shelves, etc. to be built by physical plant personnel.
Prepares campus maps showing locations of projects such as parking facilities, utilities, conduit layout, boundary and property lines, etc.
Checks existing blueprints for accuracy.
Submits detailed description of projects for cost estimate purposes.
Prepares a comprehensive list of steps involved in completing project.
May direct work of others performing drafting assignments or in the use of computer aided design equipment for drafting.
May have contact with persons outside the institution in performance of assignments.
Performs other work as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of drafting methods, materials, and instruments.
Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures and equipment.
Ability to prepare drafting sketches and detailed drawings.
Ability to make arithmetic computations and tabulations accurately and with reasonable speed.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees.
Ability to use a computer aided design system to perform drafting assignments.
Ability to instruct and direct the work of others.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Graduation from a standard high school including or supplemented by courses in mechanical drawing or drafting with a minimum of three years recent experience in engineering drafting; OR completion of appropriate two year program beyond high school with a minimum of two years of recent experience in engineering drafting.
