Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in routine histological laboratory procedures and performing related work as required.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Performs histological work such as cutting, staining, and mounting specimens of human or animal tissue.
Conducts routine laboratory experiments.
Prepares reagents, stains, and chemical solutions.
Performs basic analysis of prepared specimens according to procedures.
Operates and maintains a variety of laboratory equipment.
Works with students in supplying information and illustrating laboratory techniques.
Maintains inventory of materials, supplies and chemicals.
Performs other work as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of techniques involved in cutting, staining and mounting tissue specimens.
Knowledge of the use of reagents, stains, and chemical solutions.
Knowledge of basic specimen analysis and routine laboratory experiments.
Knowledge of the use of equipment involved in routine histologic laboratory procedures.
Ability to trim, fix in fixing solution, dehydrate and place specimen in paraffin.
Ability to use microtone to section prepared tissue.
Ability to correctly use reagents, stains and chemical solutions.
Ability to maintain an adequate inventory of materials, supplies and chemicals.
Ability to maintain an effective working relationship with students and other employees.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Graduation from a standard high school. Experience in histologic procedures.
