Definition 

Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in the maintenance of stables, care of horses, coordinating the routine activities of workers, and performing related work as required. 

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Inspects horses daily in stables and pastures for evidence of disease or injury, and reports findings to supervisor.

Establishes amount and type of rations to feed animals according to past food consumption, health, activity, and size of animals and informs supervisor of same.

Works and conditions colts and trains horses to the bridle for use in instructional classes.

Maintains a supply of rations, preventative medicines, and various supplies for horses.

Works and coordinates the activities of student workers in feeding and watering animals, changing bedding, cleaning stalls, and other routine manual tasks.

Operates tractor, truck and trailer in hauling hay, feed and equipment and in transporting animals when necessary.

Cleans fence rows and repairs fences.

Performs other work as assigned. 

Required Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of the care and feeding of horses.

Knowledge of common horse injuries and diseases and preventative care.

Knowledge of basic conditioning and training of horses.

Knowledge of stable gear, especially articles of harness for use on saddle horses.

Ability to detect injury or illness in horses and treat and/or follow a prescribed program of treatment.

Ability to follow general instructions in establishing amounts and types of rationing for horses being used for specific purposes.

Ability to work with horses conditioning, training, grooming and riding them.

Ability to coordinate the performance of routine manual tasks such as feeding and watering animals and cleaning stables.

Ability to operate required equipment such as truck, tractor and trailer.

Ability to perform manual labor under varied weather conditions.

Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees. 

Recommended Qualifications

Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Graduation from a standard high school. Experience in working with horses, including feeding, handling and training.
