Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in advanced nursery and greenhouse work and performing related work as required.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Performs and supervises the performance of planting, cultivating and harvesting trees, shrubs, and ornamental flowering plants in the nursery and greenhouse.
Performs maintenance duties to greenhouses and related manual and mechanical equipment.
Performs and supervises others performing special projects such as germination, propagating, seeding, budding, grafting, and layering.
Operates various equipment in the performance of duties such as tractor, trucks, and lawn mowers.
Determines proper insecticides, pesticides, and herbicides used in controlling insects, diseases, and unwanted plant growth.
Performs related work as required.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of thorough preparation for planting.
Knowledge of the use of fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides and fungicides.
Knowledge of propagation, budding, grafting, and layering.
Knowledge of equipment and materials used in the operation of a nursery and greenhouse.
Knowledge of good horticultural practices.
Ability to supervise a nursery and/or greenhouse operation.
Ability to operate nursery related equipment used in the work.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to evaluate situations and make decisions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and other employees.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Graduation from a standard high school. Progressively responsible experience as a nursery and/or greenhouse worker. Possession of a valid Tennessee operator license as issued by the Tennessee Department of Safety.
