Definition 

The primary responsibility of the Interpreter position is to provide quality interpreting and support services for the deaf and hearing impaired students. 

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Interprets classroom and lab lectures for deaf and hearing impaired students.

Interprets special events for deaf and hearing impaired students, faculty and staff.

Interprets campus meetings for deaf and hearing impaired faculty and staff.

Performs other related duties as assigned. 

Required Knowledge and Abilities

Basic knowledge of sign languages, such as American Sign Language (ASL) and Pidgin Signed English (PSE).

Basic knowledge of technical signs pertaining to the course of study.

Basic knowledge of deafness, deaf culture, deaf language, and the deaf community.

Basic knowledge of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of ethics.

Basic proficiency in English, i.e., vocabulary, spelling, grammar, reading, writing and literature.

Ability to orally interpret simultaneously with PSE.

Ability to interpret for multi-handicapped deaf students, including those with visual impairments. 

Recommended Qualifications

Graduation from a standard high school or GED; associate degree from an accredited interpreter training program; possession of state certification or certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).
