Definition
Employees in this class are under immediate supervision. Work performed in the routine care and handling of experimental animals and performing related work as required.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Cleans and washes cages, pens, animal quarters, and equipment.
Measures, grinds, and mixes feeds according to specific instructions.
Maintains simple records and inventories of animals, feed, bedding, equipment, and environmental controls and recordings.
Observes animals and informs supervisor of any unusual signs or behavior.
Provides some nontechnical assistance in laboratory experiments.
Performs other work as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of cleaning methods and equipment.
Knowledge of simple record keeping.
Ability to care for and handle experimental animals.
Ability to observe, keep records, and communicate with researchers.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to provide assistance of a nontechnical nature to researchers.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Graduation from a standard high school.
