Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in routine to moderately complex duties in caring for experimental animals, providing some technical assistance to researchers, and performing related work as required.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Handles, cares for, feeds, and transports experimental animals.
Insures that the assigned experimental routine is maintained and modifies the routine as instructed, such as exposing experimental animals to varying amounts of smoke in research involving tobacco use.
Provides some technical assistance, analysis and/or evaluation as directed.
Provides technical guidance and assistance to lower ranking or new employees.
Performs other work as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of some basic aspects of caring for animals in a research environment.
Knowledge of basic goals of medical research work involving animals.
Knowledge of basic technical skills and procedures involving laboratory research.
Knowledge of the use of required laboratory tools and equipment.
Ability to handle, care for and transport experimental animals.
Ability to follow oral and written research instructions carefully and closely.
Ability to provide technical assistance as required.
Ability to evaluate situations and make decisions.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Graduation from a standard high school supplemented by basic college courses in biochemistry, physiology, or related field. Some laboratory experience relating to the field.
